Artificial biomaterials gain more and more importance as replacement of dysfunctional tissues in the body. Electrospun fibers from polymer solutions whose diameters are in the micrometer to nanometer range play a role in the replication of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in order to obtain models that can empathize with the physiological conditions.

Modification of electrospun fiber surfaces


The aim of the work is to create electrospun fibers made of PLGA adding the six-armed star-shaped functional additive NCO-sP(EO-stat-PO). The isocyanates can be utilized to modify the surface of the fibers in various ways. Here for example, growth factors, antibodies or other proteins may be bound. Subsequently, the biological study of such systems by various in vitro tests is carried out. In this way, models can be produced to simulate native extracellular matrix or for later applications as wound dressings required for treatment of large burns or injuries.
